Clean up disk errors
Whenever a program crashes or you experience a power outage, your computer may create errors on its hard disk (sometimes referred to as a hard drive). Over time, the errors can result in a slow PC. Fortunately, the Windows operating system includes several PC tools, including a Check Disk program, to identify and clean any errors on your computer and to help keep it running smoothly.
Note: You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps. If you aren’t logged on as an administrator, you can only change settings that apply to your user account.
Run Check Disk:
Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP users
- Click the Start button Start icon, and then click Computer / My Computer.
- Right-click the hard disk drive that you want to check, and then click Properties. (for most of us, this is the C: drive, unless you have multiple drives on your computer)
- Click the Tools tab, and then, under Error-checking, click Check now.
- Select Automatically fix file system errors. Otherwise, the disk check will simply report problems but not fix them. This typically will run for 30 minutes. You should run this once a week.
- To perform a thorough disk check, select Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. This scan attempts to find and repair physical errors on the hard disk itself, and it can take much longer to complete typically over an hour and a half. You should run this once every month.
- To check for both file errors and physical errors, select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. During this scan look for bad sectors section and if you notice that there is anything over zero then this is an early warning sign that your hard drive is failing.
4. Click Start.
Depending upon the size of your hard disk, this may take several minutes. For best results, don’t use your computer for any other tasks while it’s checking for errors.
Note: If you select Automatically fix file system errors for a disk that is in use, you’ll be prompted to reschedule the disk check for the next time you restart your computer. Click Yes / Schedule Disk Check. The next time you restart your computer, it will automatically run through a disk check before displaying your login screen. After the disk check finishes, Windows will automatically bring you to your login screen.
Laptops with Nvidia graphics card recall litigation
There have been alot of clients bringing in their laptops with a built in Nvidia graphics card for repair. The problems that shows up is the laptop will either not turn on, will turn on but nothing will show up on the screen, and distorted video. This is due to the Nvidia chips simply overheating themselves and failing. This affects laptop manufacturers from HP, Compaq, Dell and Apple. These manufacturers offered a one year extension to their models affected by this problem. The problem with this has been that they never advertised it or problem occured after the standard 1 year warrenty and 1 year extension. The solution by the manufacturers have been to replace the motherboard / systemboard with many laptops still failing after several attempts.
Now you can file a claim to either get reimbursed for paying for repairs or get your laptop replaced. The deadline to file a claim is March 14, 2011.

Change your email acount passwords
There have been many users reporting that their email accounts have been hacked. This goes for all major sites such as gmail, aol, yahoo, hotmail and others. Clients have been calling wondering whether their computers are infected. Usually they start hearing from other people on their address book that they are receiving spam messages. The messages would say something like they are stuck in London without any cash or passports and they needed money to be sent to them. Their computers do not have a virus infection but their easy passwords were the problem. Not only does spam get sent using your email but some clients have reported that their address books were erased as well. So we recommend everyone to change their password to have at least 8 characters, 1 uppercase letter and 1 number. All the major site have also setup a system where you can recover your password with secret answer and question system. This not only provides a way for you to recover your password but also adds another layer of protection from having your account hacked.
Faster PC with something old and something new with ReadyBoost
Do you have an old USB flash drive or SD flash disk lying around in your drawer? You can use it with Windows Vista or Windows 7 to make your PC faster using ReadyBoost. This works for your laptop and desktop. Most laptops and desktops come with a built in flash card reader that you can use, instead of having a USB drive sticking out of the side of your PC. Basically what it does is use the flash drive as cache for your most used programs.
1. Plug in your USB flash drive or SD flash disk and select “Speed up my system”
2. Choose the Dedicate This Device to ReadyBoost option and click OK.
3. Windows will now configure the drive then restart your computer. Just use your computer as you normally would and frequently used programs will be stored on the ReadyBoost drive.
